Chest measurement for all regions: Minimum 75 cm unexpanded with 5 cm expansion. West Plain region requires minimum 76 cm. Sons of serving or ex-GREF personnel get a relaxation of 2 cm in height, 1 cm in chest, and 2 kg in weight.
Selection Process – Step by Step
Step 1 – Written Examination
Every candidate must appear in a written exam. The paper is OMR-based objective type for most posts and may also include subjective questions. The question paper is bilingual, available in both English and Hindi. Duration varies between 1 to 3 hours depending on the post.
Minimum passing marks:
- General, OBC, and EWS candidates – 50 percent
- SC and ST candidates – 40 percent
After the exam, question papers are collected from all candidates. You are not allowed to carry them outside.
Step 2 – Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
Candidates shortlisted from the written exam must complete a 1-mile run (1.6 km) within 10 minutes. This test is qualifying in nature and does not carry marks for final merit. PwBD, Ex-Servicemen, Ex-Agniveers, and departmental re-appointment candidates are exempted from PET.
Step 3 – Trade Test (TT)
A practical trade test is conducted for Hindi Typist, Operator Communication, OEM (Ordinary Grade), and Electrician posts. Candidates must score at least 40 percent marks to qualify. This test is also qualifying in nature and does not contribute to final merit.
Step 4 – Primary Medical Examination (PME) and Document Verification (DV)
Only medically fit candidates are inducted. A thorough medical examination is conducted at GREF Centre, Pune along with full document verification. After clearing all stages, selected candidates undergo initial training at GREF Centre, Dighi Camp, Pune before being posted anywhere in India.
Final merit is prepared based only on written examination marks, provided the candidate has qualified PET, Trade Test, and cleared the medical examination.
How to Apply – Step by Step
Step 1 – Visit the official BRO website at https://bro.gov.in/recruitment-activities and download the application form along with the admit card format.
Step 2 – Print the application form on A4 size bond paper (75 GSM), one side only. Print the admit card on both sides of a single paper sheet.
Step 3 – Fill in the complete application form in capital letters using English or Hindi only. Make sure every detail matches your original certificates, especially your name and date of birth as per your Matriculation or 10th board certificate.
Step 4 – Pay the application fee through the SBI Collect online portal. After payment, save or print the e-receipt and attach a copy with your application form.
Step 5 – Paste a recent passport-size colour photograph (not older than 1 month from the date of advertisement) at the designated place on the application form and on the admit card. Both photographs must be identical. Keep at least 12 copies of the same photograph for further stages of recruitment.
Step 6 – Attach self-attested photocopies of all required documents. This includes your date of birth certificate, educational qualification certificates, caste certificate if applicable, experience certificate if required, OBC or EWS certificate not older than 1 year as on the closing date, driving licence if applicable, and NCC or sports certificates if you are claiming weightage marks.
Step 7 – Sign the application form and provide your left-hand thumb impression at the designated places. Also sign the admit card. Any application without signature or thumb impression will be directly rejected.

Apart from basic pay, all selected employees receive Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance, Hard and Risk Allowance, free rations, free single accommodation, clothing allowance, remote area allowances, National Pension Scheme benefits, group insurance, children education allowance, leave travel concession, and medical facilities as applicable to Central Government employees.
After a two-year probation period, competent authority assesses the suitability of the candidate for continuation in service.
Important Points to Remember Before Applying
- Only male candidates are eligible. Female candidates cannot apply.
- Date of birth must match the Matriculation or SSLC certificate exactly. No change will be entertained after submission.
- If your name has changed after Matriculation, you must submit an attested copy of the Gazette Notification showing the changed name.
- Any certificate in a language other than Hindi or English must be submitted with an attested Hindi or English translation by a Group A Gazetted Officer.
- SC, ST, OBC, and EWS candidates who qualify on their own merit will be placed in the General category automatically. They do not need to apply separately against UR vacancies.
- OBC candidates falling in the Creamy Layer must apply under the UR category.
- Admit card will be posted to the address filled in the admit card section. Make sure the address is correct and complete.
- Results and recruitment activity updates will be displayed on the official BRO website.
